Duct Coupling — PP and PVC Straight Duct Connector

A duct coupling connects two straight duct sections of the same diameter end-to-end. It is a short cylindrical sleeve with a socket at each end — slide one duct section into one side, the other duct section into the other side, weld or solvent-bond both connections, and the run continues. No flange bolts. No gasket. Just a continuous duct joined at the coupling.

Xicheng manufactures duct couplings in polypropylene and PVC. Standard diameters are injection-molded as single-piece sleeves with both sockets formed in one mold cavity — concentric bores, uniform wall thickness, identical socket depth at both ends. Non-standard diameters and large sizes beyond molding capacity are fabricated from PP or PVC sheet, rolled to diameter, and welded along the longitudinal seam.

When a Flanged Connection Is Overkill

Not every duct joint needs bolts and a gasket. In straight runs where access for disassembly is not required, a socket coupling provides a simpler, lower-cost connection with fewer potential leak paths. A flanged joint requires two flanges, a gasket, and multiple bolts — each bolt hole is a potential leak point through the flange body. A socket coupling has one continuous circumferential weld or solvent bond at each end. Two potential leak paths instead of a dozen.

Couplings are also the standard method for extending an existing duct run. Cutting into a straight section to add a tee or an elbow is major work. Adding a coupling and a new duct section at the end of the run is straightforward — slide the coupling onto the existing duct, insert the new section, weld both ends.

Injection-Molded: Concentric Sockets From One Mold

An injection-molded duct coupling is produced as a single cylindrical sleeve. Both sockets are formed by the same mold core, so their centerlines are identical — the connected duct sections will be coaxial. The socket internal diameter is sized for a sliding fit over the duct external diameter, with enough clearance for the weld or solvent bond but not so much that the duct can shift off-axis before the joint is fixed.

The wall thickness is uniform throughout — no thin spots from an unevenly rolled sheet, no internal weld bead projecting into the flow path. The socket depth at each end is identical. For standard duct diameters, injection-molded couplings are the lowest-cost, fastest-lead-time option.

For diameters above injection molding capacity or for duct sizes that do not match standard tooling, couplings are fabricated by rolling PP or PVC sheet to the required diameter and welding the longitudinal seam. The seam weld runs the full length of the coupling — a continuous joint from one end to the other. Full-penetration welding ensures the seam shares the same chemical resistance and mechanical properties as the parent sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When should I use a coupling instead of a flanged connection?

A: Use a coupling in straight duct runs where access for future disassembly is not required. Couplings are simpler, lower cost, and introduce fewer potential leak paths than flanged connections. Use flanged connections at equipment interfaces, at damper or valve locations, and at any point where the duct must be removable for maintenance access.

Q: Can a coupling be used to join ducts of different diameters?

A: No — a standard coupling has the same socket diameter at both ends and joins ducts of the same diameter. To join ducts of different diameters, you need a reducing coupling. Xicheng fabricates reducing couplings to order — send us both diameters.

Q: What is the lead time?

A: Standard injection-molded duct couplings ship within 5 to 7 working days. Fabricated couplings require 7 to 14 working days.
